Here is a summery of our concept:
Work progress
Period 1
Digital Receipt System business plan has been developed during a period of four weeks. This project has been introduced with the brainstorming week and producing of 50 different business ideas. The rich variation of ideas was summarized and the next step was to discover and recognize their weaknesses and strengths. Five ideas were chosen for further development consisting of research after existing technologies that can be used or can be developed for realizing each business idea. At the end of this period our group members decided that development of Digital Receipt System seemed to be the most sensible and promising idea. One of the leading reasons for our choice was the group’s ambition of creating something realistic and right at the time.
The main research was divided in three different research fields:
- Technology: Which current technologies are there on the market that can support or can be developed for DRS future implementation?
- Business to business: Who are the current competitors and what are the possible threats to our future company?
- Business to customers: Identification of customer’s actual needs. A market research was done by producing material consisting of relevant questions for interview sessions.
This process consisted of several fields of interest:
- Which are our products? In what way can we design them to be sure that they are going to be nothing else but supportive, user-friendly, communicative and well needed? How is the distribution of these products going to be designed? In what order are they going to be introduced to market? Does our product design guarantee development of a possible standard on the market?
- Since our opinion is that failure of success of other competitors on the market mostly depends on their very limited target group, one of our biggest challenges was to define a target group that we can reach and count on for a long time. Our goal was to create both a standard within future digital receipt managing industry but also a product that is going to change people’s behaviour during dealing with their receipts and guarantee proofs. Questions that have been asked were, how can we reach our target group, which strategies are we going to use with ambition to implement something completely new in peoples life?
- Planning a start of completely new company was one challenge that demanded consideration of many factors that could affect us in a negative way. Implementation of a completely new product and changing people’s behaviour takes time and the profit is minimal during this time. How is DRS going to survive during the first year with almost none profit? According our calculations we could not expect to reach our break-even point until the first quarter (year 2). How much capital is going to be used during this uncertain first year? And how are we going to divide it between our biggest costs.

C.A.R Creature Animated Rhythm is basically a new kind of music player that consists of a real running mouse and a (cage) platform sensitive to it´s movement. Running around, the mouse creates different sounds which can be probably get better described with the following phrase: Dj Mouse in the House! More info about technical solutions will be available soon. Probably some pictures too.
I know the idea sounds crazy, but it´s pretty cool.
Stay cool.
China
The current trend in China is that the industry is developing very fast and it’s hard to keep track of everything that is happening, China is changing rapidly. With a large number of Internet users to come, China is a market that many companies will want to have part in. Estimated number of Internet users in China 2011 is 250 million. The biggest problem in China today is the cultural differences between local values and foreign view on digital media usage. Sebastian Adam at DMG says: “China is a hot economic and cultural property, but you can't just come into Beijing as a foreigner and jump right in like some blue chip international brands have tried. Many have been burned.” The facts is that the educational level in Chinese digital media is poor. Many big international firms move in to China and becomes the first choice for western companies. They employ a lot of people from Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan because of the lack of talent among the Chinese. This means that the true Chinese design seldom gets exposed and the Chinese people have a hard time to identify with the productions. Ben Weldon at ThreadDesign says: “The industry here isn’t that good. Westerners don’t understand the Chinese market. Chinese studios don’t understand western needs.”
While in Hong Kong...
The situation in Hong Kong is a bit different from mainland China. Mostly because of the both long and close contact with international markets. Hong Kong is nowadays a part of China, but the culture is still very different. While the Chinese don’t understand western culture, people in Hong Kong are used to international trends and lifestyle which creates a suitable environment for foreign companies. A possible threat for foreign companies in digital media in the future may be a sudden interest for the original Chinese culture. A situation where international agencies don’t understand the traditional values would possibly develop. As mentioned before Hong Kong has educated people within digital media and has no problem following the current trends. Hong Kong also have the advantage of its geographical location. It’s close to both mainland and the Pacific. The result of this is that Hong Kong always is experiencing the latest innovations and technology earlier than other parts of Asia. This is part reason why Hong Kong has a leading role in the Asian digital media market.
Stay cool.

They also said that they were searching for people from our school for the internship in the future.
It sounds like a great place to be. At the Kong they are coming up with the great and crazy ideas whole the time. The only bad thing is that they are hiring other agencies to do their work.
Be cool
By the way I need to mention that I´m not really happy with the camera movement. As you probably have noticed there are several sudden camera movements during it´s rotation around the box. Anyway it will be fixed as soon as possible.

So far, we managed to gather quite a bit of information from several companies and individuals in Asia. Their point of view of the current situation of the digital media situation in this area of the world distinguishes from company to company. Our main goal was to get a clear picture of the current development within digital media in China and India and surprisingly some of the interviewed companies pointed out how the digital media education in Asia does not follow western standards. Actually some of them were pretty negative towards Asian digital-media education. At the same time there were those who said that the market works and the future is bright. Now the question is who is right?
Anyway, we are still working on the research... so don´t take me too serious yet.
Until then.. stay cool and be nice.
